In 2012 several amputees from the Louisville Metropolitan area began talking & it was found that what we had in common (besides the obvious) was what happened to each of us before or after our amputations. There was no active support group to contact and ask for information nor to act as a repository of information pertinent to amputees in the Metro area. We put our heads together and the result was the birth of MOVING FORWARD Limb Loss Support Group.
MOVING FORWARD is a member organization of the Amputee Coalition and is active in the Amputee Coalition peer visitor program. Several members of the group have received training and accreditation by the Amputee Coalition to become peer visitors. The peer visitor can provide the new amputee with much needed emotional support and information. If you know of someone who could benefit from a peer visit, please contact us. We take referrals from the patient themselves, family members, doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and prosthetists, as well as from the Amputee Coalition. These visits can mean a great deal to someone who is facing or who has recently had an amputation. It gives them the opportunity to talk to someone who has lost a limb or limbs and has been able to recover and get back to living a full and productive life.
We offer monthly meetings in both Louisville, KY, and New Albany, IN. These meetings provide a way to meet other amputees in our community, so that we may learn from and encourage each other. They also provide us with the opportunity to voice our concerns and help each other to find solutions to problems that we face as amputees. At some meetings, we have guest speakers who share with us information to help us achieve a healthier lifestyle. We encourage you to come to a meeting and give it a try. You will leave with new friendships, knowledge, and motivation to help you in dealing with limb loss. Family members and caregivers of amputees are welcome to attend. They, too, need support and information because they play a vital role in the recovery process.
In addition to our monthly meetings, we offer family-oriented activities, a monthly newsletter, and you can find us on Facebook at Moving Forward Limb Loss Network and Social Group. Members of MOVING FORWARD take part in several local health fairs. Members are also available to provide presentations to schools, clubs, or other organizations.
MOVING FORWARD Limb Loss Support Group, Inc., has been designated a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service. We are registered as a Not-For-Profit company in both Kentucky and Indiana. This means a great deal to the group as we continue to grow and reach out to more and more amputees. We are eligible to apply for grants, and any donations to MOVING FORWARD are tax deductible to the donor.
